Medical Lab Careers

Receive an Associate of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from Darton College.  The core classes for this degree will be offered at Waycross College with the Medical Laboratory Technology online courses being offered by Darton College.  Laboratory experiences will be offered on the Waycross College campus. Graduates of the Medical Laboratory Technology Program may then obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree through Armstrong Atlantic's online Medical Technology Program.

To help students reach their academic goal, the MLT program offers a network of support services including: Career Counseling, Web Help technical support, learning resources through GALILEO Interconnected Libraries, and financial assistance.

Program Description
Darton's two-year Medical Laboratory Technology program prepares graduates to practice as a laboratory technician in hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, and other health care facilities. Graduates are eligible for the national certifying exams.

Program Goals

  • Provide students with a broad educational background utilizing a variety of resources and experiences.
  • Provide undergraduate MLT curriculum based on current needs.
  • Develop the students' professional attitudes and ethics required by the laboratory profession.
  • Educate the students in the merits of continuing education.
  • Provide southeast Georgia's need for Medical Laboratory Technicians who can function at career entry levels and assume their role as health care professionals.

MLT Admission Criteria

  • SAT score of 870 or nine semester hours of related course work with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Completion of all required Learning Support courses.
  • Transfer students must have a GPA of 2.0.
  • Students with a degree from an accredited college or university may enroll in MLT technical courses, providing prerequisites are met.

Additional Requirements

  • A minimum grade of C is required in each MLT professional course.
  • Hepatitis B Virus Immunization (HBV) required prior to enrollment in MLT Technical courses.
  • Liability insurance required upon enrollment in Clinical Externship.
  • To satisfactorily complete the curriculum and to develop the skills required of an entry level medical laboratory technician, the student must have:
    • Visual acuity (with or without corrective lenses) sufficient to differentiate colors used as reaction indicators, to observe the patient during phlebotomy procedure, to differentiate and identify specimens utilizing microscopic examination
    • To read laboratory manuals, procedure policies, specimen labels, test requisitions and other materials pertinent to professional practice
    • Physical ability to manipulate clinical laboratory instruments and equipment in a manner consistent with operational procedures.
    • Manual dexterity to perform venipuncture procedures and to operate hand-held medical laboratory equipment and tools in a manner consistent with operational guidelines

Clinical Assignments

  • The MLT program provides clinical training opportunities for students with hospitals and clinics in Southeast Georgia. Clinical assignments are made by the program faculty with approved affiliates. Students must be prepared to travel to the clinical training facility.
