THE MEDIEVAL THEORY OF THE HUMORS

CHOLER (YELLOW BILE):  This humor corresponded to the element Fire.  Its qualities were hot and dry, and it produced in a person a complexion that was choleric (irascible, bilious, passionate).  Its related signs in the zodiac were Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.  And it was associated with the planet Mars (the lesser evil).

MELANCHOLY (BLACK BILE):  This humor corresponded to the element Earth.  Its qualities were cold and dry, and it produced in a person a complexion that was melancholic (sullen, dejected, bad tempered).  Its related signs in the zodiac were Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.  And it was associated with the influence of Saturn (the greater evil).

BLOOD:  This humor corresponded to the element Air.  Its effect was to make a person sanguine (ardent, cheerful, venereal, liberal).  Its related signs in the zodiac were Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius.  It was also associated with the power of Jupiter (the greater fortune).

PHLEGM:  This fourth humor corresponded to the element Water.  Its impact on people was to make them phlegmatic (cold, dull, calm, apathetic).  Its related signs in the zodiac were Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.  Its planetary influence was found in Venus (the lesser fortune).
