COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Math 1101, Math 1111, or Math 1113
This course is an Area F introductory mathematics course for early childhood education majors only. This course will emphasize the understanding and use of the major concepts of number and operations. As a general theme, patterns and strategies of problem solving will be used and discussed in the context of various topics.
OVERALL OBJECTIVE:
To provide the mathematical background necessary to understand the overall structure and explain in multiple ways the math taught in grades PK-5.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
JUSTIFICATION:
Research shows an effective teacher of elementary math has the ability to do the following:
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
TO DROP A COURSE WITHOUT PENALTY:
In order to drop a course officially without penalty, a student must obtain and fill out a Drop/Add form from the Registrar's office or advisor, acquire faculty signatures, and return the completed form to the Registrar's office before the designated date published in the Academic Calendar posted on the College website and in WebCT.
GROUPWORK:
Because collegiality is an important aspect of teaching, groupwork is a required part of this course. For each group assignment, you will be expected to:
GRADES:
Because you are entering a field where ethics are extremely important, you will be held to high ethical standards.
The grading system is a point system. Your grade will be your percentage of the total possible points. Points will come from the following:
Attendance Points
As acknowledgment of the effort needed to be on time and in class, students who attend ALL of the classes will earn an automatic 200 points. Everyone will begin with class with these points.
HOWEVER, I acknowledge that sometimes a class absolutely must be missed. So if you must miss class, 50 points will be deducted. You will then have the opportunity to make up both your attendance and your participation points as long as you do not miss more than 20% of the classes (a total of 3 classes). When you miss all or part of a class, study your classmates' notes, do the activities, research the topic, and study enough so that you can show me you know the material you missed. If you do that, you have shown you missed nothing and you have participated. You will have until the test for the unit during which the class is missed to meet with me, demonstrate your understanding, and earn the missed points. After each unit test, the zero grades and attendance deduction will stand.
Class Participation and Online Postings
In GaView (WebCT), rubrics have been posted. Some of the activities we do in class and some of the postings you are assigned are graded based on these rubrics.
Assignments:
These will vary in points and will be ongoing through the semester. They will be posted in WebCT.
Because all assignments are available online, absence is not an excuse for not completing assignments. Because work may be submitted electronically, late work is not accepted.
Tests:
Although there are 3 units, there will be only two regular in-class tests--Unit A and Unit B. The material in Unit C will be partially tested on the final and partially tested via a take-home assignment.
Final Exam:
The final exam is given on final exam day. It will include the material from all three units with particular emphasis on Unit C.
The points for classwork, discussion, attendance, homework account for 65% of the grade. Unit test A and B account for a total of 20% of the grade (10% each.) Unit C and the Final Exam account for 15% of the grade.
All grade points will be posted promptly in WebCT. If you have ANY questions about grades, ask immediately. You will have until each unit test to question grade postings for that unit. After the unit test, grades will stand.
SCALE:
| A= (90 - 100) Near perfect mastery -- student has surpassed expectations B = (80 - 89) Above average mastery -- excellent work C = (70 - 79) Adequate mastery D = (50 - 69) Major weaknesses--not prepared for the next math course F = below 50 Insufficient mastery of the material |
WF= Withdrawal of student by faculty for absences beyond 20%
of class meetings. W = Voluntary withdrawal by the student. WF = Withdrawal by student after midterm with no mitigating circumstances (See catalog) |
