Chinese
• Largest group of   Asian-Americans
• Immigration began with  the Gold Rush in 1849
• 1870 – depression in California
• 1882 – immigration limitation
• Since the 1940’s, household income and level of education is above the national level

The Vietnamese
• Thirty Years War - 1945-1975
• Cambodia and Laos
• Hundreds of thousand of people were uprooted
• Boat People - thousands in 1975 tried to reach rescue boats off coast
• By 1971, over 197,000 had been accepted by U.S.
• By 1992, over one million S.E. Asian refugees resettled in the U.S.

Refugee Resettlement
• 1960’s - wives and children of U.S. citizens
• At the end of the war, refugees were evacuated and resettled in U.S.
• United Nations High Command for Refugees (UNHCR)
• Indochina Migration and Refugee Assistance Act - 1975
• Refugee Act of 1980
• Pres. Ford switch responsibility to Interagency Task Force for Indochinese Refugees (IATF)
• Refugee camps
