Matter Conversion
Description
This event tests the competitors’ knowledge of heat, temperature, energy transfer, and their relation to physical changes in matter.
The Competition
A series of stations will be set up with questions relating to heat, temperature, and physical changes in matter. The competition will include questions about simple heating and cooling curves. Applications of changes in the physical state of matter (solid to liquid to gas, or vice versa) may also be included in the competition.
Other Information
Questions will include all six levels of Bloom’s taxonomy:
knowledge, comprehension, comparison and contrast, analysis, synthesis,
and evaluation. Questions higher on the taxonomy will count for more
points. Points will be awarded based on the quality of the
response as well as the accuracy of the answer for higher-order
questions.
Each team will be provided with access to a set of chapters from a
middle grades physical science text on the topics of heat, energy,
temperature, and their effects on the states of matter. This resource
shall serve as a basis for
the content of the competition.
Please note: only studying the information provided in the text will not be sufficient preparation for this event. Topics should be investigated further and in greater depth with other resources.
Scoring
The winning team will be determined by the greatest number of points
earned.
