Associate of Science Teacher Education

Degree Requirements

To be admitted into an undergraduate (bachelor's degree) educator preparation program within the University System of Georgia:

  1. Students must earn a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on all attempted hours in the System core curriculum in areas A-F, as required for teacher preparation.
  2. Students must have a passing score on the Regents' Test.
  3. Students must have a passing score on the GACE (Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators)
    basic skills test.
  4. Some receiving institutions may have higher admissions criteria.
AREA A: Essential Skills  
ENGL 1101 and 1102 or ENGL 1101H and 1102H 6
MATH 1101, MATH 1113* or MATH 2531 3
*if appropriate, 3 hours may be used to satisfy Area A with the additional hours used
in Area F. 		9
   
AREA B: Institutional Options  
(Must take 5 hours in Area B if only 10 hrs are taken in area D.)  
Choose one of the following:  
CISM 2001; COMM 1110; SMTE 1501; POLS 2501; SOCI 2501; RELS 2020; 3
or SABR 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, or 2005  
Choose one or two of the following as necessary to complete 4-5 hours in Area B:
SMTE 1501L* or SERV 1001** - may be taken up to 2 times 1-2
*Must be taken concurrently with SMTE 1501
**To be taken concurrently with a Core Course		 4-5
   
AREA C: Humanities/Fine Arts  
ENGL 2111, 2112, 2121, 2122, 2131, 2132; HUMN 2111 or 2112 3
Choose one of the following:  
ENGL 2111, 2112, 2121, 2131, 2132; HUMN 2111, 2112; PHIL 2010;  
COMM 1110; MUSC 1100; SPAN 2001, 2002; RELS 2020; FREN 2001, or 2002 3

CHEM 1211K; BIOL 1107K; BIOL 1111K; PHYS 1010K or PHYS 1111K 4
Choose one of the following:  
CHEM 1211K, 1212K; BIOL 1107, 1108K; 1111K, 1112K; PHYS 1010K, 1111K, 1112K or BIOL 1501 with or w/o BIOL 1501L  
(3 hours w/o lab or 4 hours w/lab) 3-4
Choose one of the following:  
MATH 2200 or 2270; SMTE 1501 or BIOL 1501 (3 hours w/o lab)  
MATH 1113* or MATH 2531* 3-4
*If appropriate, 3 hours may be used to satisfy Area D with the additional hour used in Area F. 10-11
   
AREA E: Social Sciences  
POLS 1101 and HIST 2111 or 2112 6
Complete two of the following:  
HIST 2111, 2112, 1111, 1112, 1121, 1122; ECON 2105, 2106; PSYC 1101;  
SOCI 1101, 2501; POLS 2501, 2201; ANTH 1102, or ANTH 1104 6
