For the third straight year, seniors at Wayne County High School (WCHS) have the opportunity to participate in the Accel program on the WCHS campus, thanks to an educational partnership between the Wayne County Board of Education and Waycross College.
The Accel program allows high school students to enroll in University System of Georgia (USG) common-core curriculum courses, simultaneously earning dual high school and college credit for courses successfully completed. Through the program, students are eligible to earn eight high school Carnegie units and 25 college semester “core” credit hours, which are transferable to any USG institution. Tuition for the program can be paid through the HOPE Scholarship. Students wishing to participate must meet minimum requirements set by WCHS and WC. These include a minimum SAT score, minimum high school grade point average, and successful completion of at least one Advanced Placement (AP), pre-AP or accelerated course in the specific content area. Students must have permission from a parent or guardian and receive three teacher recommendations as well. All classes are taken on the WCHS campus. Accel provides seniors the opportunity to complete their freshman year of college while still in high school. Representatives from WCHS and WC recently met on the WCHS campus to finalize the renewal of the partnership. Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
