Waycross College’s athletic department recently helped young athletes improve their basketball skills during individual and team camps on the WC campus.
“Baldwin’s Ballers Basketball Camp”, four weekly sessions held during the month of June, focused on fundamentals of the game. The camp provided each participant with a sound foundation to facilitate and enhance future individual development.
According to Cory Baldwin, head men’s basketball coach, a lot of emphasis during each session was placed on defensive skills. Overall, Baldwin said he saw a lot of improvement in each camper’s abilities at the conclusion of the sessions.
“It was good to see each kid get better throughout the camp,” he said. “We had some kids who could barely dribble when they started. When the sessions were finished, they were dribbling two basketballs at a time.”
Baldwin said members of WC’s men’s basketball team also helped during each session.
“The players were great,” he said. “Some of these guys want to be teachers and/or coaches when they graduate. This is a way to give job training.”
Reco Lewis, a point guard for the Swamp Foxes, said he enjoyed helping the campers achieve certain skills during the camp.
“I enjoyed seeing the kids accomplish a drill or skill that they were saying they could not do at first,” he said.
In addition to “Baldwin’s Ballers”, WC, along with Ware County High School, hosted two team camps involving high school teams throughout southeast Georgia. Trey Hill, assistant basketball coach at Ware County, called the team camps a success.
“Camp was great for us,” he said. “It was a chance to be a part of the beginning of something that is going to be big and successful (for) our program, Waycross College, and our area.”
Baldwin said both camps offered unique benefits to participants and that he is looking forward to seeing the camps grow and become more successful.
“These camps provided a chance for kids to learn the game of basketball for the first time or to work on their skills,” he said. “The camps also helped to get kids off the couch and away from the television and video games. Finally, these camps allowed us to show off the WC campus and to remind people that they can stay at home and attend college.”
Both the individual and team camps were sponsored by Brantley Printing, Chick-fil-A, Coca-Cola, Ellianos Coffee Company, The Patterson Bank, Pro Image Sports, and Walker Jones.Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
