The thirty-fourth Waycross College commencement ceremony will be held on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 7 p.m. in the Waycross College Gymnasium located in the Physical Education Building.
This year’s commencement speaker will be Erroll B. Davis, Jr., the chancellor of the University System of Georgia (USG). Chancellor Davis is responsible for the state’s 35 public colleges and universities, approximately 302,000 students, over 40,000 faculty and staff, and an annual budget of approximately $6.3 billion. The USG also has administrative responsibility for the Georgia Public Library Service, which manages the state’s 61 public library systems.
Prior to taking office in early 2006, Davis served as Chairman of the Board of Alliant Energy Corporation for six years. He joined Alliant in 1998 as President and Chief Executive Officer, eventually retiring from his dual roles in July 2005. Davis retained the chairman’s post until his move to the USG.
Davis served as a member of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents from 1987 to 1994. He is also a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of Carnegie Mellon University, of which he is a life member. Davis presently serves as a member of the Southern Regional Education Board and the Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pa., Davis earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon in 1965 and a master of business administration degree in finance from the University of Chicago in 1967.
He is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including recognition as one of Georgia Trend magazine’s “100 Most Influential Georgians” in 2008. He has also been honored by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Black Enterprise, Fortune, and U.S. Black Engineer magazines.
Davis and his wife, Elaine, established the Davis Family Foundation, which makes annual grants to numerous students in need.
Ms. Kim Day will induct this year’s graduating class into the Waycross College Alumni Association. Ms. Day is a 1996 graduate of Waycross College where she served as Vice President of the Student Government Association, President of the Baptist Student Union, and as a Waycross College Ambassador. She received a bachelor’s degree in Christianity from Mercer University in 1998 and a master’s degree in college student development from Appalachian State University in 2002.
Day is currently the Director of Student Activities and Leadership Development at Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC) in Spartanburg, S.C. She is very active on the SMC campus, where she and her division have been recognized with numerous honors. She is also active in the Spartanburg community as a member of several civic and non-profit organizations.
Guests of the graduating class are encouraged to arrive early due to limited seating and parking. Members of the graduating class may request parking permits from WC’s business office for guests needing special parking arrangements. A security staff member will be near the Physical Education parking area to direct guests to the special parking area and drop off area for the elderly and physically challenged.
Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
