SGC-WC consolidate softball teams

June 25, 2012

South Georgia College and Waycross College have announced the consolidation of softball teams with Waycross College’s Bryan Hartley serving as the team’s interim head coach.

The team will play a scrimmage schedule this fall, and the regular season will begin in spring 2013.  All home games will be played on the Douglas campus.

According to Hartley, 21 players will make up the new team - eight players from Waycross (four sophomores, four freshmen) and 13 players from South Georgia (four sophomores, nine freshmen).

“The players from both teams are very excited about this consolidation,” said Hartley.  “We (Waycross) bring a lot of talent and they have a lot of talent.  The combination should definitely help us be successful next season.”

Hartley began Waycross College’s softball program in 2010, leading the Swamp Foxes to back-to-back appearances in the GCAA Conference Tournament.  He said the consolidation will have not only short-term, but also long-term benefits.

“Coming together will help our recruiting efforts in the future,” he said.

The team will be known as the South Georgia College Tigers this fall.  The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents will approve a name for the consolidated institution in August, and the process of selecting a mascot will immediately follow.
