WC splits doubleheader with Darton College

April 16, 2012

ALBANY - Waycross College earned a split with conference leader Darton College April 13.  The Swamp Foxes lost game one, 9-1, and won game two, 5-3.

The Swamp Foxes’ (23-12, 10-4 GCAA) only run in the first game came on a home run by Summer Rose.

A big defensive play, key hitting, and strong pitching propelled WC to victory in game two.

With the Swamp Foxes leading 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, second baseman Brooke Wilcox dove to snag a ground ball up the middle.  She flipped the ball to shortstop Alex Wood, who completed a double play that got the Swamp Foxes out of the inning.

Offensively, Aimee Johnson led WC with a 3-for-3 performance, including a home run, triple, and three RBI’s.

Game two starter Mandy McClendon kept the potent Darton offense in check by holding the Lady Cavaliers to only three runs.

“Mandy pitched a great game in game two,” said head coach Bryan Hartley.

The Swamp Foxes remain in second place in the GCAA with three regular season doubleheaders remaining.  The next home doubleheader is this Wednesday against conference foe Middle Georgia College.  The first game is scheduled for 2 p.m.

All home doubleheaders are played at the Trembling Earth Complex in Waycross.

Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
