Chattahoochee Tech edges WC, 64-61

January 22, 2012

The turnover bug picked the worst time to bite the Waycross College Swamp Foxes Saturday night.

Leading 61-58 with less than a minute to play, the Swamp Foxes committed five turnovers and saw the Chattahoochee Tech Golden Eagles take full advantage, escaping with a 64-61 win.

“When you have the lead with one minute to play, you’ll win 90 percent of the time,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “Unfortunately, this was one time where we didn’t.”

In a game where the biggest lead was only seven points, WC (13-4, 3-2 GCAA) survived seven ties and four lead changes before having one last chance to send the game into overtime.

With 0.4 seconds on the clock and most of the Swamp Fox faithful on their feet, Adam McLeod managed to shake loose from his defender long enough to take an inbounds pass and shoot a desperation three-pointer.  The shot fell short as time expired, sending the Golden Eagles home with an important conference road win.

McLeod was WC’s leading scorer with 20 points, followed by Stan Maxwell (15 points, nine rebounds).  Robert Powell rounded out the top scorers with nine points and three rebounds.

“We can’t cry too long, because we have one practice before our next conference game Monday night,” said Baldwin.

WC’s three-game homestand continues Monday night against the Albany Tech Titans.  Tip is set for 7 p.m.

General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.

Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
