Second half comeback gives WC important road win

January 18, 2012

MACON – Waycross College’s men’s basketball team overcame a 16-point second half deficit Jan. 17 to defeat the Central Georgia Tech Cougars, 62-59.

Darius Tookes led the Swamp Foxes (13-3, 3-1 GCAA) with 19 points and six rebounds.  Robert Powell had 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Andrew Lawrence finished with 10 points, which included shooting 40 percent from the three-point line.

WC trailed the entire game and didn’t take its first lead until less than a minute remaining in the second half.  An important part of the Swamp Fox comeback was the team’s trademark defense.  In the final 10:30, the Cougars only scored four points, all of which came on free throws.

“Conference road wins are so hard to come by,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “For us to battle back the way we did speaks volumes for our team.”

The Swamp Foxes lost Kelcey Walker (six rebounds, five assists) in the second half when he fouled out with seven minutes remaining.  Darius Tookes praised the work of his teammates who came off the bench to fill the gap left by Walker.

“Keldrick (Davis) and KeShaun (Mayfield) were big for us in the last seven minutes without Kelcey,” he said.

WC returns home Saturday, Jan. 21 to play Chattahoochee Tech.  The Chattahoochee Tech game is the first of three straight home games for the Swamp Foxes.

Tip for the Jan. 21 game is set for 7 p.m.  General admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.

Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
