Late free throws propel WC to first conference win

January 7, 2012

Stan Maxwell’s 9-of-10 free throws in the final 48 seconds propelled Waycross College to its first conference win of the season.  The Swamp Foxes defeated the Gordon College Highlanders, 78-67.

Maxwell’s shooting spree began with 48.3 seconds remaining and WC (11-2, 1-0) holding a 67-64 lead.  Maxwell made two free throws after a Highlander foul.  On the next possession, Maxwell was fouled again and watched as Gordon’s Reigarvius Williams spiked the basketball in frustration, which led to technical fouls both on Williams and Highlander coach Israel Ingle.  Maxwell calmly stepped to the line and sank six straight free throws, extending the Swamp Fox lead to 75-64.

Maxwell made one of his two final free throws with 27 seconds remaining.

“Stan is averaging 83 percent from the line for the season.  For him to make those free throws in that situation with all of the activity around him says a lot,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.

Darius Tookes led the Swamp Foxes with 27 points in the win.  Maxwell finished with 13 points and six rebounds, while Andrew Lawrence had ten points and seven rebounds.

Outside of Maxwell’s clutch shooting performance, the game was fairly even on paper.  Each team finished with 32 total rebounds, with WC winning the turnover battle (20-17).  The Swamp Foxes shot 44 percent from the field, while the Highlanders shot 40 percent.

“This game was up and down, wild, fast, and active the whole night,” said Baldwin.  “It was the epitome of a conference game.”

The Swamp Foxes travel to East Georgia College Jan. 11 for another conference showdown.  The team will return home next Saturday, Jan. 14 to face conference foe Atlanta Metro.  Tip for the game is set for 7 p.m.

“We have 17 games left, and they’re all conference games,” said Baldwin.  “None of them are going to be easy.”

General admission to all home regular season games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.

Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
