The Waycross College Swamp Foxes utilized a balanced scoring attack and a strong defensive performance Dec. 10 to dominate the Tennessee Temple University (JV) Crusaders, 90-48.
Robert Powell and Darius Tookes led the Swamp Foxes (9-0) with 14 points each, followed by Stan Maxwell and Kelcey Walker who each finished with 12 points. Lydell Manigo had 10 points in the win.
“We were able to go inside early and maintain that presence the entire game,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “Herb (Thomas) and (Darius) Tookes got points around the basket, and Robert (Powell) and Stan (Maxwell) gave us a lot of points off the bench.”
On the defensive side, WC held Tennessee Temple to 28 percent shooting and forced 29 turnovers. The Swamp Foxes dominated the boards as well, holding a 55-33 advantage.
“Being able to out-rebound the other team has been our best attribute so far this season,” Baldwin said.
The Swamp Foxes’ first nine games have been non-conference matchups, which have allowed the fast start to the season. WC will play three more out-of-conference games before they begin defense of their conference title at home Jan. 7 against Gordon College.
Baldwin said this type of schedule has its advantages and disadvantages.
“The advantage is by the time we play our first conference game, we’ll have 12 games under our belt,” he said. “The disadvantage is most teams in our conference will have already played two or three conference games. We’ll just have to see how it works.”
Baldwin acknowledged the next three games will feature teams that play similar to those in WC’s conference, which should further prepare his team for a successful conference run.
The Swamp Foxes host Atlanta Sports Academy this Saturday, Dec. 17, and will play Tallahassee Community College and Florida State College at Jacksonville Dec. 30-31 in the Tallahassee Community College Classic in Tallahassee, Fla.
