Swamp Foxes improve to 6-0

November 22, 2011

FRANKLIN SPRINGS – Waycross College’s men’s basketball team improved to 6-0 Nov. 21 by defeating the Emmanuel College (JV) Lions, 63-59.

Kelcey Walker led the Swamp Foxes with 18 points, four steals, and two blocks.  Stan Maxwell had eight points and 11 rebounds, while Darius Tookes finished with eight points and six rebounds.  Robert Powell had seven points and five rebounds.  Herb Thomas rounded out the top scorers with six points and eight rebounds.

The game was much closer than the previous meeting Nov. 15 in Waycross when the Swamp Foxes ran away with a 77-32 win.  Following that game, head coach Cory Baldwin was glad for the win but prophetically cautioned his team not to overlook the Lions when the two teams met again in Franklin Springs.

“In the crazy world of junior college basketball, you never know if you will see the same team again,” said Baldwin after the Nov. 15 game.  “Last year, we beat Brewton-Parker College by a big margin at home and won by only three points when we went to their place.”

The most recent Emmanuel College win marks the 50th victory for WC’s basketball program.  Overall, the Swamp Foxes have a 50-22 record.

“To get 50 wins before playing 75 games is a great accomplishment for a startup program,” said Baldwin.  “This speaks volumes for our administration, faculty, staff, student-athletes, and community.  We have a great fan base.  They should be proud and enjoy this accomplishment.”

WC’s next home game will be Tuesday, Nov. 29 when the Swamp Foxes host the junior varsity team from Brewton-Parker.  Tip for the game is set for 7 p.m.  Admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.

Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
