The Waycross College Swamp Foxes took advantage of their size and depth to win their fifth straight game Nov. 15, defeating the Emmanuel College (JV) Lions, 77-32.
Robert Powell led WC (5-0) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Darius Tookes had 15 points and six rebounds, while Stan Maxwell finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, and five steals.
“They (Emmanuel) were a smaller team, so we were able to set the tone early by going low to the post,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “After that happened, they weren’t able to keep it close.”
The Swamp Fox defense was again on display as the team forced 27 Lion turnovers and made 17 steals.
A secondary storyline to last night's game involved sophomore starter Adam McLeod. McLeod broke a bone in his shooting hand during practice Monday night, forcing him to miss his first game of the season. According to Baldwin, doctors have said McLeod could be out 6-8 weeks.
“I hate it for Adam, but we‘ve got to play through it,” said Baldwin. “Our guards did a good job playing without him for the first time tonight. While we would love to have Adam back in the lineup soon, we’ve been told he may not play again until after the new year.”
The Swamp Foxes will play the Lions again Nov. 21 for their first road game of the season. While WC was able to cruise to a victory over the Lions at home, Baldwin said his team doesn’t need to be overconfident when WC travels to Emmanuel.
“In the crazy world of junior college basketball, you never know if you will see the same team again,” said Baldwin. “Last year, we beat Brewton-Parker College by a big margin at home and won by only three points when we went to their place.”
WC’s next home game will be Tuesday, Nov. 29 when the Swamp Foxes host the junior varsity team from Brewton-Parker. Tip for the game is set for 7 p.m. Admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the college’s founding in 1976.
