Swamp Foxes roll to season opening win

November 3, 2011

The 2011-2012 season is off to a good start for the Waycross College Swamp Foxes.  WC notched its first win by defeating the Martinique Golden Stars, 83-26.

Stan Maxwell led the Swamp Foxes (1-0) with 18 points and six rebounds.  Adam McLeod finished with 11 points and three rebounds, while Robert Powell rounded out the top scorers with 10 points and six rebounds.

The win was bolstered by a tenacious defense that held the Golden Stars to under 30 points while forcing 30 turnovers.

“Our goal has always been to hold opponents to under 30 points each half.  To hold a team to fewer than 30 for the game is pretty exciting,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “We have a chance to be very good defensively.  To be able to pressure teams as well as play good half court defense is a good combination.”

While getting the first win of the season is exciting, Baldwin acknowledged there are some areas his team needs to work on to get better.  The most pressing need at this point is free throws.  The Swamp Foxes made only 14-of-36 for the game (39 percent).

“Free throws tend to have a snowball effect,” Baldwin said.  “We missed some early and it kept getting worse.  I think we all know what we’ll be working on in practice tomorrow.”

The Swamp Foxes continue their season opening home stand this Saturday night, Nov. 5 against the Southern Crescent Tech Tigers.  Tip for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m.  General admission to all home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.

Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the College’s founding in 1976.
