Waycross College’s second-year softball program received national exposure this summer at one of the largest softball tournaments in the country.
Bryan Hartley, head softball coach, participated in the Colorado Sparkler Tournament near Denver, Colo., sponsored by Triple Crown Sports.
“This was a huge event,” said Hartley. “There were around 650 teams from all over the country that played at 20 different softball complexes in the Denver area. The talent was unreal.”
Prior to the tournament, Hartley said teams nominated their best players to participate in all-star games, which were coached by college coaches. The teams were grouped according to high school graduation year.
“I coached six all-star games while I was there,” he said. “After each game, we (coaches) gave an ‘exit talk’ to the players. This allowed me to talk to them about Waycross College. I didn’t realize how popular Waycross College would be. Many players asked for my business card and I eventually ran out.”
Following each all-star game, Hartley said he helped nominate six players to play in one of six All-American games. These games were also played just prior to the start of the Colorado Sparkler Tournament, and Hartley was selected to coach one of the games.
“CBS Sports televised the All-American game that was played on the field next to ours,” he said.
When Hartley wasn’t coaching, he was busy recruiting. He attended many tournament games, as well as recruiting camps, in search of a pitcher for the Swamp Foxes.
“My main purpose for attending the tournament was recruiting,” he said. “I’m happy to say that Jasmine Garcia, a pitcher from Pearland, Texas, has signed and will play for the Swamp Foxes next season.”
Hartley said the Swamp Foxes begin practice the week of Aug. 15 and will begin a preseason schedule of games in September. The regular season begins in February 2012.Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the College’s founding in 1976.
