Swamp Foxes named to GCAA all-region softball team

May 5, 2011

The coaches of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) have announced that three members of Waycross College’s women’s softball team have been named to the All-Region team.

Samantha Howard was a first team selection.  In conference play, Howard had a .484 batting average and a .797 slugging percentage.  Overall, she finished with five home runs and 25 RBIs.  Howard set a school record by scoring a total of 40 runs during the season.

Aimee Johnson was also a first team selection.  For the season, Johnson finished with three home runs and a school-record 29 RBIs.  She had a .429 batting average and a .627 slugging percentage.

Rachel White was a second team selection.  Head coach Bryan Hartley said White was selected primarily for her defensive play as one of the catchers for the Swamp Foxes.

“Both Rachel and Aimee were great catchers for us this season,” he said.  “Only four catchers from the whole conference were selected to the All-Region team.  Two of them were Swamp Foxes.”

Hartley said he is very proud of all three players being selected and believes this is a great accomplishment for the first-year softball program.

“This is a big deal for them as freshmen,” he said.  “It is well deserved.”

Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the College’s founding in 1976.
