Reco Lewis was selected as an honorable mention to the NJCAA’s Division I All-American Team for men’s basketball.
Lewis, a sophomore from Nahunta, Ga., averaged 13 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 4.5 steals per game during the 2010-2011 season. He shot 38 percent from the three-point line and had a 75 percent free throw shooting average.
Lewis’ 4.5 steals per game led both the GCAA and the nation.
“I was shocked when coach told me,” said Lewis. “This is not just for me, but for my teammates as well. I couldn’t have done this without their effort.”
Along with being named as an All-American honorable mention, Lewis was selected as GCAA Defensive Player of the Year, was runner-up for Player of the Year, and was a first team, All-GCAA selection. The Georgia Basketball Coaches Association also selected Lewis for the All-State Team.
“I’m proud of Reco and his teammates for this recognition,” said head coach Cory Baldwin. “Reco was our leader on and off the court all season and we didn’t win the GCAA tournament or make the national tournament without his leadership.”
Lewis said as many as four different four-year colleges and universities are currently talking with him about possibly playing basketball next season. He also described a humorous incident in his hometown involving him and the Swamp Foxes’ success this past season.
“I was in the turn lane at a red light in Nahunta with my window rolled down. A lady recognized me and told me she was excited for our team and was going to send her sons to our summer basketball camp. She kept talking after the light turned green, so I was holding up traffic,” he said with a smile.Waycross College has been a proud member of the University System of Georgia since the College’s founding in 1976.
