WC softball splits with No. 19 Georgia Perimeter

March 22, 2011

Waycross College’s women’s softball team split a conference doubleheader with Georgia Perimeter College March 20.  The Swamp Foxes lost the first game, 9-0, but defeated the 19th-ranked Jaguars, 3-1 in game two.

WC (12-15, 4-2 GCAA) only managed three hits against the defending conference champions in the game one shutout.  Head coach Bryan Hartley attributed that to GPC’s pitching and also timely hitting by the Jaguars.

“Their starting pitcher carried them to the national tournament last year,” said Hartley.  “Plus, they hit the ball really well in the first game.”

After a slow start in game two, WC’s bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Trailing 1-0, the Swamp Foxes loaded the bases with Alex Wood (triple), Kayla Calhoun, and Samantha Howard.  Wood scored on a passed ball, and Aimee Johnson reached on a Jaguar error.  Calhoun scored on the error to give the Swamp Foxes the lead, 2-1.

A two-out, RBI single by Rachel White scored Johnson to extend the lead to 3-1.

Starting pitcher Mandy McClendon and the Swamp Fox defense held the heart of the Jaguar lineup in check in the top of the seventh to pick up the win.

“Mandy pitched a great game,” said Hartley.  “The girls were excited about the win, but they also knew they had it in them to win.  They knew they didn’t play the way they could in the first game.”

The Swamp Foxes begin a three-game road trip March 26 against Georgia Military College, Tallahassee Community College, and the College of Coastal Georgia.  The GMC and Coastal games are both conference matchups.

The team returns home April 5 for another conference doubleheader with Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC).  The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Trembling Earth Complex in Waycross.  Admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
