Swamp Fox softball sweeps South Georgia College

March 16, 2011

Waycross College’s women’s softball team earned an important conference sweep of the South Georgia College (SGC) Lady Tigers March 15.  The Swamp Foxes defeated the Lady Tigers, 8-2 in the first game and used late inning heroics to edge SGC in game two, 8-7.

“Getting our first conference sweep feels good,” said head coach Bryan Hartley.  “The girls deserve it.”

After quickly falling behind 4-0 in the first two innings of the second game, the Swamp Foxes (11-14, 3-1 GCAA) battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the third.  An RBI single by Kayla Calhoun in the bottom of the fourth and RBI singles by Deborah Caccavale and Katelyn Baxley in the fifth gave WC the lead, 7-4.

In the top of the seventh, two Swamp Fox errors and timely hitting by the Lady Tigers tied the game, 7-7.  Singles by Rachel White and Baxley in the bottom of the seventh gave the Swamp Foxes runners in scoring position with two outs.  Calhoun followed with a single that drove in White for the winning run.

“We would have won the game in the top of the seventh had it not been for our mistakes,” Hartley said.  “The team came into the dugout focused on winning the game in the bottom of the seventh and got the job done.”

The Swamp Foxes will end their current homestand this Sunday, March 20 in another conference matchup with Georgia Perimeter College.  The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the Trembling Earth Complex in Waycross.  Admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
