WC softball splits conference opener

March 14, 2011

Aimee Johnson’s three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning of the second game gave the Waycross College Swamp Foxes a split in their conference opening doubleheader March 11 against the East Georgia College Bobcats.  WC cruised in game two, 10-0, while falling to the Bobcats in the first game, 2-0.

“We didn’t hit well in the first game and left a lot of people on base,” said head coach Bryan Hartley.  “The girls were disappointed in the way they played and I was proud to see that they huddled together before the second game started.  You could tell they were ready to play.  You could see it on their faces.”

The second game looked as if it would be eerily similar to the first when the Swamp Foxes (9-14, 1-1 GCAA) loaded the bases with one out in the first inning only to see Summer Rose ground out on a fielder’s choice and Deborah Caccavale strikeout.

WC got on the board in the second inning following an RBI single by Alex Wood.  The Swamp Foxes extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth after Mandy McClendon and Wood both reached on errors.  McClendon scored on a wild pitch and Wood scored on a sacrifice fly from Kayla Calhoun.

An explosion of runs occurred in the bottom of the fifth.  After Rose and Caccavale both flied out, Rachel White and Nicole Williams reached on errors.  McClendon drew a walk, which loaded the bases.  Wood’s bases-clearing double gave the Swamp Foxes a 6-0 lead.  Calhoun followed with a double of her own, which scored Wood.  After a Samantha Howard walk, Johnson’s home run ended the game based on a 10-run mercy rule after five innings.

WC’s homestand continues Tuesday, March 15, when the Swamp Foxes host South Georgia College in another conference doubleheader.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Trembling Earth Complex in Waycross.  Admission to all regular season home games is five dollars with children five and under admitted free.
