WC to face No. 10 Wabash Valley in NJCAA first round

March 9, 2011

Waycross College’s men’s basketball team will face the tenth-ranked Wabash Valley College Warriors from Mount Carmel, Ill., in the first round of the NJCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

The first round game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 15 at 1 p.m. (EST) at the Hutchinson Sports Arena in Hutchinson, Kan.

“Wabash Valley is a big team,” said head coach Cory Baldwin.  “One of their players, a 6’7” guard, was the Player of the Year for their conference.  They are also a 3-point shooting team and can score really well.  I believe they are one of the top ten scoring teams in the country.”

Baldwin said one of the areas in which the Swamp Foxes (26-7) could have an advantage is in their up-tempo, defensive-style of play, which has become a trademark of the team.

“Wabash is not a fast-paced team,” Baldwin said.  “They are pressable, which could work to our advantage.”

The Warriors (28-5) are a member of the Great Rivers Athletic Conference.  They represent District 16 of the NJCAA.  The Swamp Foxes, a member of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association, represent District 13.

The entire NJCAA Tournament may be viewed online at www.njcaa.org/tv .

Swamp Fox fans are invited to come to campus to watch the tournament games with WC students, faculty, and staff.  The games will be shown in WC’s auditorium and will be available to the campus and the community throughout the Swamp Foxes’ tournament run.  There is no admission charge to attend.

Fans are also invited to campus Saturday, March 12 to cheer on the team as they board the bus for Kansas.  The bus will depart at 8 a.m. from WC’s gymnasium.
