Travis Ellison, a sophomore on Waycross College’s men’s basketball team, has signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball for the University of West Georgia (UWG) next season.
Ellison, from Mableton, Ga., will join teammate Austin Collins who also signed a letter-of-intent to play for UWG. “I am thrilled that Travis and Austin will stay together,” said Cory Baldwin, WC’s head men’s basketball coach. “They room together now, so that will be neat for them.”
Among his season highlights, Ellison averaged ten points and 8.5 rebounds per game. His rebounding average was tops for the team and fourth best in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association. He holds the single game record in rebounds, snagging 12 against East Georgia College.
Ellison had three “double-double” games this season where he reached double figures both in scoring and rebounding. He is the recipient of the MasterCard Award for leading the team in charges. Ellison was also selected as an honorable mention to the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association’s All-NAIA/Junior College Team.
In addition to Ellison and Collins, two other players signed letters-of-intent to play basketball at a four-year university. Marcus Benitez signed with Albany State University while Brandon Hosely signed with Florida A&M University. Baldwin is pleased to see his players move on to the next level. “We as a college and an athletic department are excited, but not surprised, that all four of our sophomores have successfully moved on (to the next level),” said Baldwin. “I am excited for Travis. Not only is he getting to continue his education while playing basketball, but he is getting to do it close to home.”
Bryan Hartley, WC’s athletic coordinator, is also thrilled that four Swamp Fox players will continue their college basketball careers. “We had four sophomores on our inaugural basketball team and we are proud that all four have signed to continue (to play) basketball and (pursue) their education at four-year universities,” said Hartley.
