Marcus Benitez, a sophomore on Waycross College’s men’s basketball team, has signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball for Albany State University next season.
Benitez, from Stone Mountain, Ga., started 27 games for the Swamp Foxes during the team’s inaugural season, shooting 74 percent from the free throw line. He was the recipient of the All-Around Award for helping out in every area of the game.
Among his season highlights, Benitez scored in double digits in ten regular season games, four of which he finished with 20 or more points. He had a season high 23 points against conference foe Gordon College. Benitez finished fourth on the team in rebounding and was an honorable mention selection for the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association’s All-NAIA/Junior College team.
Benitez is one of four players to sign a letter-of-intent to play basketball at a four-year university. Head coach Cory Baldwin is pleased to see his players move on to the next level.
“We as a college and an athletic department are excited, but not surprised, that all four of our sophomores have successfully moved on (to the next level),” said Baldwin. “It speaks volumes for our academic standards, our athletic program, and our team. Marcus will fit in great at Albany State University. He is a student-athlete who has constantly grown during his two years and has his best school and basketball ahead of him.”
Bryan Hartley, WC’s athletic coordinator, is also thrilled that four Swamp Fox players will continue their college basketball careers.
“We had four sophomores on our inaugural basketball team and we are proud that all four have signed to continue (to play) basketball and (pursue) their education at four-year universities,” said Hartley.
The other three players signing letters-of-intent are Austin Collins (University of West Georgia), Travis Ellison (University of West Georgia), and Brandon Hosely (Florida A&M University).
A signing ceremony for all four players will be held Thursday, May 6 at 3 p.m. in the Waycross College auditorium. The public is invited to the event.
