Waycross College Men's Basketball Team

May 3, 2010

Austin Collins, a sophomore on Waycross College’s men’s basketball team, has signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball for the University of West Georgia next season.

Collins, from Blairsville, Ga., started 28 games for the Swamp Foxes during the team’s inaugural season, finishing sixth in the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association (GJCAA) in three-point shooting percentage (34.7% per game). He was the recipient of the AT&T Award for excellence in long distance shooting.

Collins was named as an honorable mention to the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (GABCA) All-NAIA/Junior College team. He was also named to the GABCA’s All-Academic Team.

In addition to his long distance shooting abilities, Collins will be remembered for making the historic first basket to open WC’s inaugural season. He hit a three-pointer in the Swamp Foxes’ season opener against East Georgia College Nov. 3.

Collins is one of four players to sign a letter-of-intent to play basketball at a four-year university. Head coach Cory Baldwin is pleased to see his players move on to the next level. “We as a college and an athletic department are excited, but not surprised, that all four of our sophomores have successfully moved on (to the next level),” said Baldwin. “It speaks volumes for our academic standards, our athletic program, and our team. I think Austin is a student-athlete that will take advantage of this opportunity to the fullest."

Bryan Hartley, WC’s athletic coordinator, is also thrilled that four Swamp Fox players will continue their college basketball careers.

“We had four sophomores on our inaugural basketball team and we are proud that all four have signed to continue (to play) basketball and (pursue) their education at four-year universities,” said Hartley.

The other three players signing letters-of-intent are Marcus Benitez (Albany State University), Travis Ellison (University of West Georgia), and Brandon Hosely (Florida A&M University).

A signing ceremony for all four players will be held Thursday, May 6 at 3 p.m. in the Waycross College auditorium. The public is invited to the event.
